Mods, please move this if I've posted in the wrong place, but I thought that climate adaptability was more of a management question than a breed question.
Being in the process of moving to new property in the country and getting chickens again, I thought I might like a few white eggs in the multi-color egg basket. Since I have a very strong preference for black, white, and black and white chickens I was thinking of the following breeds as possible options:
Ideal's Production Black
California Grey
Austra White
I live in central North Carolina, where heat and humidity rule and triple-digit summer highs are more common than single-digit winter lows. They will be housed on a well-drained slope with access to both sun and shade in coop and predator-hardened run and allowed out into a larger run enclosed in electric poultry netting. What can other southeasterners tell me about these breeds and this situation?
I'll definitely be having Delawares, Australorps, Light Brahmas, and Dark Brahmas with an option on Cuckoo Marans, Black Langshans, and Black or White Ameraucanas, intending to end up with a flock of about 20. (I loved my Delawares and my Dark Brahmas in my previous flock).
