Here goes another try at determining my chick's gender. She is supposed to be a pullet, but she's feathering SO SLOW and her comb looks rather large. She's going to be 5 weeks old tomorrow. She seems to stand more erect and is almost always on top of the food and waterer. She used to be a loud mouth but now has quieted down. Olive was the biggest, now she's the smallest. The other cochin is the same age and is feathered the most, even our EE who is a week younger has more feathers. Do only females have pencilling? She's not a bantam.

Nothing screams boy to me as of now but my loudest chick in my last batch was a rooster. I guess just keep an eye on it.

She's hardly made a peep lately, probably because she's the smallest. I wonder if both sexes of partridge cochins feather slow.

Vote boy on that one also. Interesting you say it is slow feathering, I got some partridge cochins in a hatchery mix this spring and they were the slowest feathering by far.

Gracie here is the same age as Olive, she has feathered even more than in this pic.

Here is Harley who is a week younger. She is more feathered than in this pic too.

That looks like a cockerel to me.

We had a cockerel in our first 6, we couldn't keep him. I don't want to do that again.

Do y'all know if only the female partridge cochins have pencilling?

I took these today. Olive is now 6 weeks old. "She" has orangish feathers on her neck and chest.

Darn... Olive is doesn't have a dark chest like I see on cockerels, does that come in later?
