We have just had layers and turkeys, we have just finished 3 more coops and about 1/2 acre paadocks fenced and divided into 6 paddocks. So now we are expanding into more layers with a rooster, wyndottes and brahmas with roosters, we have pure bred wyndotte and brahmas roosters to go with our approx 25 hens purebred. i currently do not have a rooster for the layers, our layers are rhode island reds and now these beauties, Does my layers need a purebred rooster or can one of this cockerels be their rooster ? we have 22 rhodes 13 months old and now the 20 or so mixed chicks pictured aboveDepends. Can you keep a rooster where you live? So you have a pre-existing older rooster? Are you using your flock for eggs, meat, or pets who lay eggs? Or are you hoping to use them for showing birds?![]()
