I sense that it is going to be a very long night I have four in the brooder now. Two pipped with holes in them and third starting to pip and 5 more that still need to get started. I have a feeling I am not going to get much sleep tonight.

It is such a long process. I do remove my babies to the brooder, too. Just works better. Do all yours pip at the top of the egg, the upside??? Just curious, as that is what mine have done, unless used as a kickball.

I also have had some success with helping my of poults out of their shells. 2 died anyway and 2 survived with a little PT to get there legs going better. I do think that the hard kicking required to get out of the egg is part of developing their ability to walk correctly. So it imitate that activity, I hold the poult up off the ground with my fingers between its legs and it paddles like mad! Like all exercises, series of three for a couple minutes, 6 times a day until good for go.

One last poult pipped . . need to go check on it.

So I have had 4 more hatch since my last post. One I had to help it chipped away too much shell but the membrane didn't give and it got stuck and couldn't come out. The other 3 hatched on their own very quickly once they finally decided that they wanted to get out. I have 4 more to go but they aren't doing anything. If they still haven't pipped by tonight I will candle them to see if they are doing okay. Their hatch day is technically tomorrow but everyone else has hatched already so I am thinking that the eggs got hot in shipping and started before they were put in the incubator. I would love for all of them to hatch but seeing how they were shipped eggs 8 out of 12 is pretty good. Still keeping my fingers crossed for the others though. No leg problems in this bunch. They are still a bit sleepy from being up all night but their toes and legs are all straight and they are bebopping around the brooder right now. Can't wait until they are old enough to go out though this batch is loud lol.

Nice looking bunch of cheeps! 8 out of 12 is pretty good and I, too, would definitely give the remaining ones some time. At candling tonight, what are you looking for?

Usually I look for movement. I figure if they are still moving then they have a chance. Also if they look shrink wrapped and the air cell is huge then I know they are probably gone.

One of the 8 chicks is not walking when I looked at her legs the backs of both her hocks is wide open with no skin covering it. She hatched naturally with no problems. I separated her and bandaged her hocks lightly so that they would stay clean but she could still move them. Hoping she does okay but really not sure I have never seen that before especially in a bird that had no problems hatching.

Glad to see all the peepers hatching...this has been a long week, grandgirls went home yesterday, my brother died on the 8th...so a long week. I still had the 2 eggs in the bator, tossed them today...lost the Marans mix egg...but 2 healthy happy, really scary quiet peepers in the brooder. To top it off we are moving, buying this time with lots of room....so packing and cleaning...love the pics, will try to get one of these 2 weirdos...gosh over a week old now

Nice to get an update on the 1 week olds! Lots to do to move; all that packing and cleaning.

Hope you and your family enjoy your new home.

Lily D--T's a balancing act for sure to have temp, humidity and ventilation all work together creating the right sized air cell. I guess I would think that a shrink wrapped chick just needed a little help getting out; that it could be still alive.

My last poult arrived today!

A little shrink wrapped. The membrane stuck to it's back and when I removed the poult from the shell, I had to leave a bit of membrane dried to the feathers. Likely in need of a warm bath to remove it. Will wait a few days as it's isolated from the older poults who would just run it over, peck it's head and pull on its feathers.

Interesting that one of the chicks has open legs at the hocks. I guess anything can happen. Can you keep the area moist? Healing is faster if kept moist. Probably that bandage will help.

I took out all the eggs remaining and accessed them. I dreaded opening them.

4 clears and one dark which had died: feathered but lots of albumen and the yolk of course. For the first time incubating I think I did pretty good, much better than I feared. Set 22: 2 died early, 4 clears, 2 died after hatching, 14 in the brooder.

I learned a ton.
