First time chicken owner! Can anyone please fill me in on all the "extras" my chickens will need? My week old chickies are in the brooder with pine chips, feeder, waterer and heat lamp and are going great.
when it comes time to transition to the coop and free range what are the extras that I need.
any information about grit, oyster shells, dust bath...??? Are these needed? Daily? Where do you put all this in a small chicken coop?

If you let your birds free-range, they may find grit on their own. When they start laying, give them free choice to oyster shell, for calcium. You can just put the shell in a little container. Chickens take dust baths regularly. If there is not a dirt spot in their pen, they may dig up the grass to make a bath, or you could just dig up some dirt for them.

I give my chickens some grit at all times inside the coop. Just in a little pot, I keep it inside so it doesn’t get wet. But they usually find their own. I also give them a big plastic bin and I fill it with some dirt and sand. I only do that if they haven’t been let out. So not a lot. Otherwise, they’ll make their own dust bath spot. Mine haven’t started laying, so they don’t have extra calcium in their diet yet. I just like to have grit and a place to take a bath available to them, they’ll use it if they need/want to.
