. Someone once told me about a fly spray they made with ACV, Dawn dishwashing detergent, and water, but I don't remember how much of each.
Any contributions would be much appreciated!
I have used the ACV and dawn and it really does work. Gallon jug of ACV and say oh 1/3 cup dawn. The dawn acts as a sticker so the ACV doesn't just dissipate. Its funny to see the horses coming in slightly sudsy...
Honestly I've tried all the homemade and alternative versions -- mixtures of ACV, garlic, and dishwashing liquid; Avon skin-so-soft; feeding garlic (which in excess can cause health problems in horses btw), commercial 'herbal' fly sprays, etc.
Never had one work worth a darn. Alas, but true.
Not saying they may not work for some other people in other situations, but not for me.
I've used Skin-so-soft on myself, but for some reason never thought about putting it on animals...
I have baby calves now, and the Bronco spray I was using isn't supposed to be safe for little ones. The ACV doesn't work as well, but I feel a bit better about using it. I'll be trying some others though: citronella, maybe the Basic H (cool stuff!).
DH and I have been stressing about how to tackle the fly issues this year. We have yaks, and we used some kind of fly spray stuff that we got from TSC last year. It worked, but I didn't like spraying my animals with some chemical that I didn't know much about. I felt so bad for them, though, when the flies would torment them. Like I said, it worked so I did it. I'm happy to see these natural recipes, and look forward to trying them. We're also going to put up a dust bag in the corral. We've got yaks of various heights, though, so that will only be effective for some of them.
Since I moved to Michigan, I have been horrified at the number/persistance of the mosquitoes! I really hate using Off and other sprays like it, but my son and I were eaten alive last Summer! We did end up using various sprays, but nothing helped. I swear we are mosquito magnets. Do these recipes work for humans, as well?
