Any hope for this rooster?

The girls know fairly quickly if he’s a good one or not. ;)

I do understand wanting to give him some time to blend in, but it sounds like you have better options. I’m gonna cry when my main flock master dies. He’s pushing 8 years old, and just last week saved some chicks and ducklings from a hawk.
Yea, I was thinking the same.... I figured the hens would let me know. And they don't seem terribly keen on him. They don't go after him in any way, but they seem to just tolerate him. They definitely resist his attempts to mate quite a bit. He is sometimes "successful", but he has to literally chase after them and really hang on before they finally stop resisting. And seeing him go after a hen for food today is probably my last straw. He full on went after her, feathers everywhere, just because she was after a treat that he apparently wanted.

Yea, he has some big shoes to fill. My last roo was great, he always let the hens eat before him and would find them bugs and worms all day long. He was super gentle when mounting them. You could tell he was very wary of hurting them, it was kind of sweet. I would even tease about it, because he was almost overly conscience at first. He did an excellent job getting them undercover for air predators. Unfortunately, we had a fox breach and he went out trying to defend those ladies. Sometimes I wondered if he was a little too passive. But I'd take that over the jerk wad I'm dealing with now.

The crowing, the jumping up on people, the attacking, the being rough with hens...yep you are just checking off the list of qualities for a rotten rooster. Water, onions and carrots will improve him no end.
Thanks for confirming. I will probably put him in a pot this weekend. He took the rest of my patience this afternoon, after making this thread.

I once had a young and gorgeous brown Leghorn rooster doing this plus beating up other hens immediately after chasing them down. Seeing this left me livid:mad:
To the crock pot he went the same evening!

Yea, previously I thought he was just nervous and needed some time to settle in. But I don't trust him which makes me want to say goodbye.

My priorities for the rooster are just to help with predator avoidance and keep the flock calm. My last rooster was excellent at this. He also never once gave me any sign that he would even think about attacking me. He just kept his distance when I, or any other human, was around. Eventually I'd like to explore hatching out some eggs, but that's not my top priority at the moment.

I could deal with him needing some time to get used to us. But I just saw him go after a hen trying to pick up a piece of food because he wanted it and it made me furious! haha

Finding a replacement won't be difficult, when I last went looking I had about 15 to choose from. Thought I made a good choice, but he is not living up to his hype at all! haha
See if you can find an Aseel/Asil rooster. That'll serve your purpose and you will love them! They are a game breed and for that reason people mistake them for maybe being aggressive. Its quite the opposite. I've raised Aseels all my life and my last one died fighting a fox! Until we had him, no hawk dared land in our yard. My toddler played with him and we hand fed him.

They're not cheap though. If you search maybe you can find one for around $100 or so. Please keep in mind that American game fowl is NOT Aseel/Asil rooster as as some people may confuse them.

Yea, I think that's where I'm at. I'm trying to be patient, was hoping maybe he'd get his poop in a group. I'm afraid I'll end up going through multiple roosters trying to find a "good" one.

But I have some chicks growing right now and I'm certain to end up with a few cockerels, so maybe I'll just go rooster-less until they grow out and I can pick the best to keep.
Him going after the girls like that, along with attacking you, that would be it for me. I give lots of room for them to settle, but hurting people and the girls is not what his job is.

Yup that happened to me once. They get you mad enough and its easy to fix it at that time.
