Any Hope??

My male mallard duck flew away yesterday morning. We went to find him but couldn’t, after over 8 hours of finding him we found him at the local car park. He was under a car. He wasn’t damaged and the local police got a broom and poked him out, he then flew even further away into a nearby pond. We cannot enter the area as it is blocked by gates and is trespassing to enter. We raised him since he was a baby and we bonded very well. I think he was hiding in some trees in the area with the pond. Will he ever return? The 2 female ducks don’t seem to mind but it’s heartbreaking to let go of a creature that was raised since birth. Is there any chance he would come back?

With out clipping wings they are just doing what they love to do fly. But we see how that gets them in trouble and us losing them. I hope he comes back but there aren’t any guarantees. Very sorry.

Yeah, we shouldn’t have took the risk of not clipping his wings. I also hope he comes back even if it’s once in a while so I could see if he is doing fine or not. No worries, just in quite a broken state right now.

I’m sure it’s hard to lose them especially when we raised them from tiny ducklings. Are the girls calling for him? I have Muscovy and a mountains rice down below I faithfully clip one wing on them after their fall molt so they stay home and are safe. Hopefully he’ll start missing his females and maybe even get a little hungry and fly in soon.

I’ve looked at other people’s cases as well. Is it possible he might have flown away in search of more female mallards as right now he is in his mating season. If he is and does, is it possible he could return in the winter?

They did for the first few hours but I think they’ve accepted the fact he is gone and I think they’re quite sad. They’re eating less food now.

I can’t imagine why he’d fly off having two females and no drakes to have to fight off, I am not that knowledgeable about Mallards but I do know having two females would probably be enough. Probably just enjoyed flying around an got lost especially if he saw a body of water. Was there other Mallards there? As far as flying home in winter. That I can’t tell ya. Poor girls at least they have each other a lot of times when one flies off there is just one left. No other mallards, I think he flew into water because he was scared of the police.

You could try putting the females in a dog kennel and bring them near the drake, Them qaucking and talking might ecourage him to come back or you could set a live trap and bait it with some food and see if he is hungry enough to enter the cage. Hopefully he comes back ! I know how crazy mallards can be sometimes.

He might come home? He's a Drake so he will leave if given the opportunity to fly off.
