my child brought some chicks home from school after they hatched. We are new to chickens and are curious if anyone knows what sex and breed these chickens are? They are 8 weeks old. Thank you.

We have 3: the black one, golden/orange and the white chicken.

They look like mixes to me. The black one vaguely looks like a Black sex link. The white one is a rooster for sure. I say this because the comb, wattles and face are already red at a young age. Your black one looks female and I am suspect that the orange one is a boy. Personal experience tells me a red face and no/stumpy tail at a younger age ends up being a boy.

Look like crossbreds to me. The white one "actually a splash" is a cockerel. The other two look to be pullets.
Thank you. Excuse for the dumb question, but what does "actually a splash" mean? As I said, I'm brand new to all of this and apologize in advance.

Splash is a chicken color. The poster above means that the third chicken isn't pure white but splash colored, with dots and sprinkles of darker color in the white. Regarding gender, the black and orange (buff) colored chickens look like pullets (young females) to me and the white "splash" one looks like a boy - as people posted above already, that much red in the comb and face at that young age is very suspicious.

Thank you. I swear he attempted to crow the other morning. Didn't do it this morning though. Maybe just trying his chords.

Could the orange one be a buff Orpington?

Doesn't look one. The color is buff, alright, but there are also feathers with different coloration on the head, the body shape isn't like Buff Orpington, it looks too small overall and the feet are the wrong color, dark instead of pinkish. It looks like a mixed breed to me, maybe with a bit of Buff Orpington blood, who knows? Your other two look mixed to me as well.

Having said that, most of my chickens are mixed breeds and they make perfectly good backyard chickens and egg layers. As long as you don't want to breed and sell pure bred chickens or need maximum egg production, mixes are just fine.
