Had a flock of 8. 1 roo. Born March 2024 so 6 months old. All hens laying. Fed them at around 4 PM one night. All there and accounted for and eating. They go to bed around 6:30-7:00ish. 4 roost on top of the garage (they get there by flying from the porch to the roof) and 4 roost on the back porch railing. There is no coop. The roo is one of the 4 that roosted on the railing. They're all in the roosting spots OK that night.

About 9 PM we hear the roo being "disturbed" for lack of a better word. My son n I went out to check on the chickens on the back porch. One is lying dead on the ground, like she fell off the porch when she died. The roo is distressed trying to get her back on the porch. No marks on her, no blood, no signs of a fight or struggle, no feathers strewn around, the hens remaining on the porch are not disturbed. She's just lying there dead. I guess the fall could've broken her neck, but it's only like 5'-6' down. Just a regular porch height. This happened last week.

Sorry for your loss. She could have fallen off the roost for any reason, including natural causes. I have have a pullet that age or up to a year old just die suddenly. One was roosting in a pine tree with others in the afternoon, and did not go into the coop that evening. Your state vet could look for a cause of death if you still have the body, freshly dead, and send it in while keeping it cold. But, I would urge you to put them inside a chicken coop with a roost at night, and lock them up at dusk. Eventually, some or all will get taken by one of the common predators around. Raccoons, bobcats, foxes, hawks, owls, weasels, dogs and cats will all kill chickens for sport or food. Mine free range during the day, and I have still lost some to a bobcat, a hawk, and possibly a raccoon. Coops should have doors that can lock, and have 1/2 hardware cloth fencing over the windows, doors, and around the run.
