Can anyone think of a reason there would be this much change in egg color from yesterday to today in eggs from the same chicken.
These are from my 12mo old wellsomer. The dark one was from yesterday and the light one was from today. Most of the time they are darker but sometimes light. I also have 2 or 3 other hens the same age that are laying eggs that are much lighter in color than they were a few weeks ago. Nothing has changed with their diet and there are other hens in the flock who's egg color is unchanged.

anyone have any ideas about why this is happening? is it normal?

That's a drastic color change. How are you sure it's from the same hen?

As the laying cycle goes on, most hens' eggs will lighten in color and it's disappointing when you love the pretty dark brown ones! Maybe that's all that's going on?

I have one that will sometimes lay a lighter color egg on the poop board at night. The shell is usually thin. It's like the final coat wasn't applied in the egg factory.

The shells on both the dark and light eggs are both normal thickness. I know it's the same hen because it's the only one that lays an egg with calcium deposits on the outside of the egg. They are like little barnicals on the egg. usually look like dark brown speckles but if you wash it enough they all rub off.
