Any ideas of why my 18 wk old hens eggs are looking wonky?

So we have 9 hens and it seems like a few are starting to try and lay. However, we've had one egg which was broken. My thought was to add oyster shells which I did this weekend.

I'm thinking that the broken egg & one today is due to lack of calcium. Any feedback would be grand :)

Thanks!

In new layers, the quality of the first eggs will be odd and poor until they begin to lay steadily.

Some days you'll get perfect eggs; others you will get funky ones.

It should settle in a couple of weeks.

Adding additional free feed calcium can help. I find I get the best quality on good layer feed rather than an all flock with free feed calcite or oyster shell. The calcium seems to be better absorbed.

Congratulations on the new eggs :D

Yeah, some of my eggs were soft shell, thin shells or weird when they first started. 20160825_172628.jpg And fifteen months later a couple of girls will still pop out a thin shell or weird egg.
I found out early if I gave them more treats, like scratch grains, the less eggs I got and more thin shells. GC
