I never noticed this thread before- and I was looking for locals when I first joined.
I'm in Orange county NY- I 'own' 18 birds, and have six residing here with me right now. I will get up to 10 here, but I don't have space for any more than that (not to mention hubby's consent). I have, Buffy, Harriet, Shaft, Mr. Firley, Red, Toughie here. I have a noah's ark compilation of everything from cochins, marans, naked neck turkens, RIRs...
My other birds live with a friend.
Last week, I lost one of my two leghorns, Tom (she was a girl). I've brooded 25 birds, and she was the first I lost- I've had great luck with my chicks.
I'm going to start raising some meat birds as of September 3rd. I agreed to 'own' 10, but I am already thinking that's not enough. They will be staying with another person as well b/ c I don't have the space - so it's a joint venture.
I'm married with kids and a gorgeous, pita chocolate lab who has learned to leave the birds alone.
The husband started out hating the birds, and not even wanting to look at them. Tonight, he came - of his own volition- into the coop with me to watch the birds interact. He snatched a slice of bread and was eagerly feeding them and being quite amused at their antics. The daughter thinks the birds are cool, and my son thinks he's the bird whisperer.
All my friends and family think I'm nuts- partially for having chickens - I didn't grow up like this at all.
I would love to connect with other chicken folks for advice, trading, buying, processing parties, chicken sitting, whatever...
