Hi! I'm so glad to see so many New Yorkers and some hear me, at least not too far

I'm Gina and live in Mamaroneck, in Westchester County. And just beginning a battle to have a few hens. I'd love to take a ride and meet some 'chicken folks' and see how they're raising their chickens.

Hi Gina!

I am in westchester as well, pound ridge! Welcome!

I feel like a new egg myself, but I have learned so much here since April when we put in an order for chicks........ Now we keep adding to the bunch -17 in all. Ours just started to lay the first week of October! Yay!

how exciting - I'm getting my education from a friend in Louisiana and she's sharing step by step since she got her chicks -

I have to get a presentation together for my local board and decide on a coup set up. We have lots of raccoons to be concerned about, so I want to be very thorough in what I decide on presenting to them - I don't want them to have any 'safety and cleanliness' issues.

I bought Storey's guide and the health guide and am reading all I can, but I've never seen a real hen house in action - unless of course I go to LA and visit ;-)

Well, if you are interested, you are welcome to come over and see mine -pm me if you'd like.

The Journal News (a paper near here, not sure if it covers your area) is doing an article on raising backyard chickens and they interviewed me (among others) yesterday... I have a coop web site that I began when this whole chicken thing came about - www.cooping-it.blogspot.com We still have a few more things to do on it, but it sounds like the same idea as your L.A. friend.

Also, a local farm gave a talk on raising backyard chickens this past spring -I am sure they will do it again: rainbeau ridge. They have a web site too.

Also, this place has been super helpful in terms of other people's experiences across the U.S. very cool!

I hope you get board approval... if not, there is always the "stealth coop"!

I would LOVE to see your chickens - truly. If weekends are good, Sundays are good for me, or I'll take a day off from work in Oct to have some uninterrupted time. I work in the city. The Journal News is our paper too. I hope the article is in the lower hudson issue. Who is the reporter - I'll e-mail them to see when your article is being published.

I made a decision I won't sneak chickens because I know I'll be bonded to them and would never give them up if there were a problem. For all the taxes we pay, this should be a non-issue shouldn't it?
