Any one in NY or PA use mulch in their run?

I'm in New York.
I don't use landscape quality mulch but I use the mulch that is offered free to residents that results from the chipping and shredding of branches that are left curbside and are collected by the local highway departments. It works just fine.

That's good to know. We were thinking of getting a small chipper. You have a nice run.

I'm not in NY nor PA, but hope I can chime in as well. I've been using woodchips, that I obtain free from the MetroParks, and have no complaints. It keeps the grounds relatively dry, during the rainy season, and does wonders during the winter months. I let it build up for about 2-3 seasons, then dig it all up and pile it onto my compost pile prior to dumping fresh woodchips. I've also subscribed to ChipDrop and am awaiting for my first delivery, but in the meantime, continue to visit my local parks.

I am in New Mexico, I can't say enough about Mulch/wood chips. I started out with wood shavings, moved onto grass hay then sand. I was never satisfied with the cleaning, the smells or rain or snow drenching any of it. I switched to mulch in 2018 and I've never looked back. It's easy to clean, it smells good, it's light weight and it doesn't get funky if it gets wet. You will love it!

I'm in south central PA. It is very wet here. I use wood chips, also from some oaks that we had trimmed last year. We have to replenish more often than most, probably, because of the rain and living around natural springs. But it is better than any other run material that we could put in there. I dig it out when it no longer drains well, about three or so times a year so that we can replace with new. Put the heavy water logged poopy stuff in the compost pile to rot a bit more.
