His color pattern looks more like theirs than any of the others.

To be honest, I'm not happy with that list - none of them really match this chicken...
It can't be...
Buckeye (wrong comb)
Easter Egger (no beard/muff)
Naked Neck (obvious)
Sumatra (wrong color)
Appenzeller (no crest)
Buttercup (wrong comb)
Faverolle (no beard/muff)
Golden Campine (coloring/pattern)
Buff Chantecler or Brahma (wrong color)
Wyandotte (wrong comb)

Which leaves the barnevelder, but that's meant to have double lacing and I'm not seeing that on this bird. The carriage still doesn't look right either.
I'm afraid I'm at the bottom of the list and am not happy with the diagnosis...

From what you say of the size, we can throw out any game bird too. I'm still thinking one of the Japanese breeds, but I am not sure.
