Any other Canadians here?

I'm in Langley, BC. I have button quails so I don't know if that counts?

Hi Fellow Cannucks! So relieved to see other Canadians here! I'm super new to this site...about 2 minutes old! I'm in rural Ottawa! I haven't any of my birds yet...just doing my homework...but won't be long now. I need advice regarding our deep freeze winters...!

I'm having a coop built to house 4-6 Bantams....and wondered if the 4sq.ft inside applies to the Bantams too? Also - thinking of having the coop insulated... Need some advice for the -40 Winter colds!

Looking forward to making your acquaintances!

Chalmen

Hi All, I am in Haliburton County just south of Algonquin park. I have an assorted flock of about 30 chickens, 1 rooster, 13 ducks and 4 geese, (mated pairs). I am in the process of renovating a shed since the original hen house is over 17 years old and wasn't meant to be 'forever'. The 'new' one is a former kitchen/diner acquired from a cottage demolition. I am insulating with Roxul (mice don't like it as much). I always insulate as then their own heat is normally enough to keep it above freezing unless we have consistent -40's then I add a micro furnace but I also have heat lamps for back up heat. I always have either a heated bucket for water or a heat lamp over a waterer (it doesn't do well if the temps get really low if you are using a metal one since the water freezes between the sides of the metal). Well the day is nice and sunny, with no rain so I'm heading outside to do some more work to the shed.

Hello!! I am in Edmonton. Don't have hens yet - they're illegal here - but hope to be part of a pilot project in spring 2010. I am a total chicken newbie too - I need to do a lot more reading and learning before I'm ready to start!!! I wonder if anyone else from River City Chickens is on here??
