Thinking about quail and have questions.

My eggs havent even shipped yet and I'm already thinking about what I'll do with excess males to raise them up to processing size away from the girls.

I'd like to keep a bachelor pad inside the house in the basement, easier to keep lighting dim there plus flat land outside the house is at a premium and pretty much all occupied with something else. We had to bring in a couple triaxle dump truck loads of fill to get enough flat land to build out the chicken coop and run. I'm not doing that again...

I'm handy but not that handy, so I've been looking online at stuff like rabbit hutch kits. I want something raised up with a wire floor and a pull out tray for ease of cleaning. Most of them have an enclosed solid floored space that would let the quail get off the wire and where a dust bath could be put in too. However, most of these kits are flimsy, cheaply made softwood pieces of crap. Keeping it indoors would probably let it survive longer, but probably would be a pain in the rear to keep clean.

I've also seen the battery style cages from Wynola Ranch. These tick all the boxes except for a wire free area but would have the bonus of letting eggs roll out, if I ever wanted to also wanted to put specific breeding groups together at some point in the future. I dont think there'd be an easy way to get something like a dust bath or a solid surface into the cage thru the small doors, nor keep it clean easily if I managed to find a way.

I guess I'm just looking for other's experiences with having separate short term housing. Ease of cleaning would be pretty much my top priority since they'll be in my basement and I dont want them to stink.

Honestly, I just butcher mine around 5 weeks, which is well before their hormones get too bad so there's no need to raise them separate. Live weight at that age is 9-12oz depending on the bird; I might get another ounce or two by waiting a few more weeks, but I feel like it's not worth the hassle or the feed, especially when I could be using any extra caging to already be raising more.

That would certainly simplify things.

Half of the eggs I ordered are feather sexable and half are not. I guess it will just be a learning process!
