Any owners of three-legged pets?

we have two cats that had to have a leg amputated before we got them as rescue-kitties and another one from a breeder --- this kitty lost the use of one of her back legs in an accident at the cattery --

my husband says we are 'complying with the 'American Cats With Disabilities Act' --

all of these cats are waaaaaaaay faster than we are!

One of my cats got cancer in one of his hind legs, the vet amputated and he walks around fine. He can't jump up on the bed or up on the sink by himself anymore, and he milks it for all he's worth- we are softies and pick him up and put him where he wants to be, but he gets to the food, all over the house and into the litter boxes just fine. I have to scratch his head on the side of the amputation- he really enjoys that.Tthere are times you can see the stump working and his head is cocked, and you know he has an itch. We have all adjusted to him!

We'll be bringing her back from the vet tomorrow

. I was wondering if she would be able to jump with only one hind leg; sounds like we may have to make some ramps for her so she can continue her morning wake-up routine. My grandma is beside herself without Miss Callie- I think she called the vet's office at least 5 times today for status updates! It's funny, when my mom was little, cats weren't allowed anywhere near the house!

ETA: I really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences! It's so awesome to hear from people who've "been there".

She may take a little time to get use to it, but she should be back to jumping in no time. The one we had was not much of a mouser (before or after her accident), but she liked keep the garage bird free!

I have a Ferrel cat that lives on my porch that is missing half of one back leg. He is a Tom but does not try to hold a territory. since my dogs tend to keep the other cats away he manages to find a safe haven here. He has gotten used to me coming and going and has learned I will not let the dogs get him. One time another Tom came along and tried to start something with him. a second later I was out the door and was after the new Tom. I am not sure just what sort of secret weapon that fella thought Little Orange Kitty (that is what I call the poor guy) has but he has never come back. He pretty much has an entire yard to himself in a neighborhood full of wild cats. We leave him food when the weather is bad, but for the most part we let him fend for himself. I do watch him to be sure he looks healthy though.

I don't have any 3 legged animals but I do have a 1 legged husband. He gets along just fine.

My brother once had 2 three legged dogs and they got along fantastic. Animals do adapt to amputations pretty easily.

I have sheep that only has use of 3 legs. She had punctures on both back legs as a baby. One leg healed fused in an upright position. She refused to give up, so the lady that had her didn't have the heart to send her the the auction,so she canme home with us. Snap Pea doesn't even realize that she has 4 legs. She runs, jumps just like all the rest.she can even jump up onto the bales of hay like everyone else. So don't give up on those that aren't "perfect" Perfection is in the spirit of these wonderful citters!

You guys are amazing! I've always had a soft spot for the "special needs" animals, and your stories are really touching!

Callie is back with my grandma and doing well. I think the e-collar bothers her more than the fact that she is now minus a leg
