I'm thinking of getting a batch of straight run cornish X and keeping 2 of the biggest hens. I would like to cross them with a wheaten marans roo. I plan on keeping the 4 biggest F1 and just keep breeding. I haven't found any pictures of this cross though and am very curious to see the outcome.

might be a bit difficult as CX have leg and heart issues and don't think they will suvive that long

but

why not get some cornish (indian game) hens

and cross them

hog wash. Have you ever kept them i have kept many cornx well past the 8 weeks have kept them foe breeders. Its about feed and bird management. If you feed any bird 24 seven with a 24% feed you run the chance for problems.

I would be interested to see what you came up with as i have some bc marans iam going to try this with this year

That would be great if you bred them too. I didn't get a chance to cross them last summer but will definitely be crossing them this summer. I haven't doubted that I could keep a cornish X to breeding age with proper management. It would be great to be able to have my chickens hatch chicks instead of always ordering them.

yeah i am working towards having a bird like that. i am thinking about doing a four way cross, Marans Roo x CornX Hen and then doing a Rainbow Dixie Roo over a Leghorn hen and then crosing the f1s from both of those, I have heard the Dixie Rainbows are a real big bird and closer to true dual purpose, so I am getting some this year to try. I am kicking around an idea to eventually have 2 lines that I would keep a strong egg line and a strong meat line and kind of do a rolling mating with them, i havent thought it all out yet, but my desire is to get to a good true dual purpose bird so that i can be free from ordering, you know the ultimate homesteading bird. i mean if you can breed intensivly for meat, and get the corn x and breed intensively for egg and get the leghorn or lsa i have to believe that you can eventually get to a true ultimate dual purpose bird. and i will have lots of chicken soup along the way eh? I will post pics as i begin this project this year.

What you are really going to have an issue dealing with is the lack of laying ability from commerical ABCD broiler hens. Sure they will lay great for a bit but that maybe 15 eggs some quit early, and again you will get a lot of double yolked or over sized eggs that are not good for setting. ABCD birds can not be stunted properly.

If the hens lay only 15 or so eggs and are fertile wouldn't crossing the f1 back to a marans help with eggs? My plan is to breed f1xf1 and f1 x marans, then see what results of it. Anyway I'll have a freezer full.

Well 15 eggs ( or 12 chicks with a 80% hatch rate) really is not enough to build a strong population off of. The laying is linked to the size of them. While others have had them lay more for longer it really depends on the strain you have.
