Any professionals out there?

I have a degree in Business and Data Processing (back when it was Assembly, or DOS). And I managed a restaurant for about 7 years. Then I became disabled.

After 33 years in the industry, I may have worked hard enough to attain a certain level of professionalism. Graduated from the school of Hard Knocks, with a masters in Sleepless Nights.

The long name for my job is-- Senior Process Technician Utilities Plant.

Short name-- Operator.

Maybe I was responsible for the steam used in the manufactoring of the plastic, rubber and aluminum that went into the planes you fly.

I have been teaching elementary school for 22 years. (Dunno how that happened...I'm not that old!

) I've done grades preschool-6th in that time, and I'm now doing 5th and 6th math and science. I love what I'm doing. I'm not sure if that makes me professional or certifiable. My students say I need the T-shirt that says "I'm not crazy...I'm fun!"

Before we go too far, let's look at the definition of a "professional".

The traditional professions were doctors, lawyers, clergymen, and commissioned military officers. Today, the term is applied to estate agents, surveyors , environmental scientists, forensic scientists, and educators.

Doing something for money is not necessarily making one a professional.

As Hobbes said, when Calvin asked what a pronoun was... "It's a noun that has lost it's amateur status."

I am considered a professional in my work, I do logging and land clearing and have owned my business for over 25 years. At least the government calls me a professional, I work for them alot.

Just retired from 30+ years of teaching in May 2010 - have masters and an ABD (all but dissertation) on my doctorate. LOVING retirement.

Banquet Manager for a 5 Star hotel. Does that count as professional? Worked in the Printing industry for years, and now I'm working on getting my Horticulture degree. I guess I'm somewhat professional.
