I am in my 24th year of law enforcement. I am a professional. It is my understanding that if your career requires extensive training and certification which includes periodic testing and re-qualification, it is now considered "professional." IMHO, anyone who works at maintaining up to date information and who cultivates their expertise and quality of performance while getting paid to do so, is a professional.

Everyone, maybe not. You may be thinking of the more general term of professional which simply means you get paid for services rendered. I don't believe the OP meant this. That would apply to all of us and wouldn’t be much of a question.

In my case, the states are very clear with the definition. The states grant professional licenses to protect the general public. Hence, I must meet certain requirements like earn a degree, take two 8 hour tests and maintain the standards that the state has established for me. I am required to protect the public and take the responsibility very seriously.

I have a fabulous title that really means I do whatever the Exec Dir, Deputy Dir and Finance Manager wants. Glorified secretary really. But not a farmer, whom I happen to have A LOT more respect for than my bosses.

Im one of the stupid ones who went into EMS. Im a life saving EMT making the big bucks(fellow EMTers will laugh). Im also a phlebotomist fo something to do if im bored.

Was a professional vet tech for 12 years. Professional in the term that I was very well trained and skilled at what I did. What I did was pretty much everything but surgeries and "official" diagnostics. Physical disablities kept me from continuing that career choice. I work part time as a substitute classified aid for the local school system, but not quite a professional. I do enjoy it very much, but unfortunately, it is on call, and lately, not that much. What I am an actual professional at is: chaffeur, nanny, nurse, house cleaner, pet care taker, goat farmer, chicken farmer, dog walker, pooper picker-upper,stall cleaner, personal stylist, barber, dog groomer, personal chef, baker, tutor, and so much more....I'm a mom.
