If you're willing to try the animal genre, one choice might be James Herriot's, All Creatures Great and Small.

Gotta second the Barbara Kingsolver post especially Poisonwood Bible. One of the characters does whole sentences that are palindromes (a word or words spelled the same forward and backwards). And the Sue Grafton post too. Another book that I loved was Memoirs of a Geisha - the title sounds racey but I didn't think it was. It was just a great read. I know they made it into a movie but books are always better.
 
ALL THINGS TERRY PRATCHETT!!! he is amazing!!!!! I would start with the Tiffany Aching series, the first one is The Wee Free Men.
I second Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, Harry potter, and all things Barbara Kingsolver.
 
I also love Barbara Kingsolver, as many have mentioned, and her "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" is a book I think anyone on BYC would like.

I loved "To Kill a Mockingbird" and in fact have a 15 year old cat named Scout.

Laurie R. King's "Mary Russell" series of books, starting with "The Beekeeper's Apprentice" are excellent.

My favorite author is Robin McKinley, one of hers you might enjoy (featuring dogs) is "Deerskin."

Farley Mowat is best known for "Never Cry Wolf," but my favorite books of his are "The Dog Who Wouldn't Be" and "Owls in the Family." You laugh until you cry (or wet your pants) when you read those.
 
I love Jodi Piccoult and every one of her books have been good so far. Also, Barbara Kingsolver is a great writer as well. And I have read every book that Sue Grafton has written. OH, and Sandra Brown is a great read. Check out "She's Come Undone" by Wally Lamb and The Lovely Bones (?). There are so many great books to read, enjoy.

I loved that book --- just a sweet quirky story.
I burst out sobbing and shaking at the end, whew, I tear up just thinking about it.
the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

If you enjoyed those, try Kim Harrison's series about Rachel Morgan. I just finished Every Which Way But Dead and it was pretty good.
