Any reason NOT to add some sand to our wood chips in the run?

Not so sure about that. How about a mist hose or ice in an icecream bucket of water?

In our coop we use horse bedding pellets and those stay cool it seems and warm in the winter, but the chickens free range. They are mostly hiding under the Hostas today but I did put a bucket of ice water up towards the house for them.

I really don't know how mixing sand up with wood chips is going to help. Sand can get hot. Ever go to a beach on a sunny day?

Sand is going to sift through the wood chips. But, sand under the wood chips might keep the sand cool. If you wet down the sand, under the chips, I'm sure it would be cool.
