Rock cornish as in cornish x? Some can keep them alive, but this is a meat strain so most go to bucher.
Many have health problems so a restricted diet is a must as they age. They are probably too heavy to breed naturally and thus don't quite make good pets.
If you aren't talking about cornish x meat birds, I am not sure. Have fun!
they are chickens and what they are only good for meat. they have allot of leg problems is kept alive because of massive weight gain. They arent active at all. They reach slaughter weight at about 8 weeks of age
Thanx silkiechicken and hcammack. I'm sorry i didn't know i needed to specify. I was askin about rock cornish hens, the little birds ya buy in the store.I had no idea they were so involved, in fact, i knew nothing about them other than they are a real treat grilled up right.
If these are the birds that you two talk about then i guess i'll jist stick to the frozen storebots.
thanx again, Jim
Jim the cornish hens you get at the supermarket are the cornish cross meat birds everyone was talking about. The only difference is instead of slaughtering them at 7 to 8 weeks of age the ones you get in the store are done at 2 to 3 weeks of age. I believe they are supposed to be under 2 lbs.
It wouldn't be hard to raise your own if you wanted them to be small. 2 to 3 weeks max and you'd have them in your freezer. Personally I LOVE the cornish hens from the supermarket.
Thanx for the info Sharon.I also LOVE dem little birds done reeeeeal slow on the rotiserie on the grill. Run a stick thru 'em and hang 'em over hot coals is even better !!!!!!!!
I'll hafta do soem rersearch and see the cost factor is rasin up a few once and see what it's like.
Now, about yer avatar "chicken". If our cat mewe, and i use the term losely,(he's confused to say the least lol),ever gets to see this pic he will no doubt try makin one o' dem costumes himself and,(he can do anything but be a cat),and try goin in and rulin the roost for our girls.
The other night i was out in the 'grage and i found plans he was drawin up to build a stand to sell fresh eggs out from under us when we're not home.
Did i meantion he is resourcefull?
Seriously tho, i absolutely love yer avatar. Yer cat really is mewe's twin.
Jim
Thanks Jim, unfortunately it's not my cat. My dear girl "Grace" has become so fat since we moved out to the country that she would have to wear a turkey costume...we still love her though LOL. Maybe she needs to get together with your kitty and get some exercise.
Check out www.moyerschicks.com They are a small hatchery in Pa and from what I have heard others say are very reasonably priced with cheap shipping. I was just checking them out today myself to order some cornish x from them.
That is so funny, "turkey costume" , you should have heard Janet, my wife, laughhin on the phone overe this. i had to call her and tell her to pull this up and look at it. Funny you mention this situation tho. We too recently moved into the country back in Oct and i swear mewe has gained 10 #'s. It must be the relaxing atmosphere huh?
Thank you so much for the Moyer's link, Janet immediately got all smiles and said....."looks like a road trip" !!!!! I guees soon as the weather allows we'll be packin our saddle bags and headin east fer a der..er3 lol
