I think I have 2 roos in my batch of 5 chicks born around March 21st. Can anyone take a look at these two chicks and let me know your thoughts about their gender? We can't have roos, so....

Also, at what age do roos usually starting making their first cock-a-doodle-doos?

Any thoughts would be appreciated?

1# Cockerel- he doesn't look like an Orpington to me IMO.
2# Not sure, I would suggest you wait until they start crowing.

I have five born 3/17...Old English...and you can very definitely tell there is only one roo. He already has a big wattle and comb, and the four girls just have little combs like your picture of #1. Last year the same hen also had four hens and a roo born.

Sounds like there might be hope for my little ones to be pullets! Hadn't even considered that #1 wasn't even a Buff Orpington. After looking at pictures of the Sex Link, our little chick does share some resemblance. I'll be crossing my fingers. I certainly do think that we have to wait for an egg or a cockle-doodle-do I guess.

The first one is a Golden Comet and it's a pullet!

The second one looks like a Black Australorp and it's a pullet also!!
