I have been asked to fill in for the lunch lady at the local school. She is 82 and having a knee replacement. She has been at this job for 54ish years.

My goal is to make yummy food that the kids will eat. Any ideas????
I was told by one of the girls in 2nd grade, "Ms. A, can you NOT make chicken nuggets and tater tots, no one like them anymore."

I think you have to make food from what is available in the school kitchen. I dunno if you'll have much control over it

I know that. But there has to be some variations I can use. Like instead of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and corn, I could make shepards pie, or little pasties.

I forgot to mention there are around 40 kids in this school.

Poll the masses! See what the kids want to eat. With only 40 kids that would be fairly easy. Look on Recipezaar where you can type in the ingredients to get a recipe that contains all those things.

I survived the first day. I made pasta, sauce, and all the fixings. The kids and staff loved it.
I have been told I can make whatever I want. There is a inventory list I can work from but because the school is so small they will indulge me.

Any ideas?

...you have to make gump's bread, into rolls...

those LUCKY kids!
My son raved over his lunch ladies' chili. Apparently they used celery in theirs. I had to modify my chili after that. It should be easy to make enough for 40 kids...with Gump bread to sop it up with...!
I think you are swell to want them to eat well and enjoy it!
