I ordered six ‘sizzle’ chicks - hoping for at least one sizzle or frizzle. Is it too early to tell? One is definitely a smooth silkie (five toes - a bit muted black skin tone). The pics are from yesterday at six days old.

I’m a bit new to ‘growing’ silkie chicks - I’ve mostly acquired adults and have never had a sizzle or frizzle 🤷🏻‍♀️.

(Also is there a newish Sizzle thread - I’m only finding one from about 2018)

..., maybe the two middle ones? Their feathers seem a wee bit more multi directional 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is a baby sizzle, I don’t own any but I’m pretty sure they don’t get crazy feathers until at least 2 weeks, but like I said, I’m not an expert with sizzles.

Well that would be reassuring, because it seems the frizzle feathers show up pretty quickly, but I hadn’t realized how subtle the sizzle feathering could be. Thank you for the pic. 😊

"Satin" is the new breed name for what used to be called Sizzles. They are basically a new breed that has all the characteristics of a Silkie EXCEPT for their feathers which are regular barbed feathers with a really fluffy undercoat - like a Cochin. Silkies & Satins are 2 different breeds & they both come in regular & frizzled varieties like shown below. Satins have not yet been presented to the APA/ABA for recognition as a new breed but they can currently be shown as Satins in the NSB (Non Standard Breed) featherleg category.

For your chicks, you can probably compare to my pictures & know what you have by now. If the feathers are shredded (like fur), they are Silkies & if they look like regular feathers they are Satins. If the feathers of either breed are curled backwards then they are a frizled Silkie or a frizzled Satin. If you have any questions, feel free to email me - [email protected].
