Any suggestions on where to purchase cornish X chicks?

Just wondering where is a good place to purchase them from? I have been reading posts about several of them dying during raising, and wanted to know if there is a hatchery that has a better hatch that seems to live til maturity rate.

McMurray hatchery is where I buy mine.

You cannot predict their life span. It is based on not only your care, but the environmental stressors as well as predisopitioned by their genetics. Like now, going into summer, you don't want to raise these birds. heat can be a huge stress on them. One day fine next day dead. I only raise them in the fall.

Hi Miss Prissy,

i just wanted to tell you that I have gotten so much good information from your postings!! In fact, I just printed out yesterday how to build an incubator from a styrofoam cooler and will be getting the parts to try it soon.

i was thinking that now would be a good time, as the weather is warm - less heat needed, and could be outside sooner. I guess that I'll wait until September, as here in the mountains it really starts to cool off then.

I ordered my from my local feed store.
MissPrissy I wish I had thought of that factor sooner. I will be getting 23 cornish roasters in 2 weeks. I hope I can get them to live long enough. I will remember that for next year amd not order them in the summer.

Glad to help. I hate to see new meat birds owners get trapped in the situation where the birds are dying off quick and it is due in large part to stress and heat. I usually get mine in October and carry them through the cooler weather.

MissPrissy, I have 2 week old Jumbo Cornish X Rocks from McMurray that seem to be doing okay for now, but then they are in the basement where it stays cool. I'm looking to put them outstide soon since they are getting a bit crowded. Is there anything that I should do to help them when they go out? The coop and run are in a well shaded area.

Shade, ice water, cold fruits and veggies - even frozen and put out like a popcycle to keep them cool in the hot part of the day. Move them around because they poop so much you draw flies and where there is flies there are maggots - which they may or may not eat - hard to predict with these birds.

The closest hatchery to you that sells them. The less time they spend in transit, the better.

I like Meyer hatcher, but like Greyfields said, it depends on who's closest to you
