Our neighbors have free-range chickens that roam about a mile radius. Ricardo (the main rooster -- they have 2, the other one is just starting to develop spurs) hadn't been to my porch since the hurricane so I was worrying about him (normally he shows up 1-4 times a day). He turned up this afternoon with an eye injury. The first two photos are of the injured eye and the 3rd is of his normal eye (for comparison). He was very hungry and looks like he has lost weight. He ate a lot and drank a ton of water. He let me rub his back and stuck around a long time. Usually one of the older hens is with him but he was alone. I noticed the other rooster approached slowly while Ricardo was eating from my hand. He was unusually calm and gave Ricardo a lot of space. I'm not sure what to make of his eye. I didn't bother it -- just focused on feeding him and talked to him. The owners do not do anything other than coop up the chickens at night and collect their eggs. I'm not convinced they feed them much because they roam so far and show up here at daybreak every morning. They're not my chickens, but we've taken care of them for over a year now when they show up with issues.

Any thoughts on his eye? I feel for him. His range of sight is so limited with one eye, and he's used to being the protector of the whole flock (7 hens and the junior roo).

I’ve had a couple chicken eye injuries. One rooster got hurt in a fight and ended up with no eye.The other one (a very old hen) died a few days after so I never figured out what it was.I don’t think this injury is fatal. It may have resulted from a rooster fight.Idk what you should do to it,if anything.

I think one of my hens was pecked in the eye yesterday. I noticed it as I put their feed and water out in the morning. It looked similar to this roo's eye. The bottom eye lid was ripped and hanging but the eye ball looked intact. I made saline with salt (no iodine) 1/2 tsp mixed in 1 cup of warm water and cleaned the eye with a cotton ball until the crust came off. Boil the water first and let cool a bit and please wash your hands first and after treating. I then used another cotton ball with coconut oil it is antibacterial and antifungal and also an anti-inflammatory. If Googled you can find many natural oils that do basically the same thing. Did this 2x yesterday and this morning and her eye looks so much better almost unnoticeable. I hope he keeps going by your house your a good chicken person.

Thank you :) Do you think his eyeball is still there under the lid?

He looks like he was pecked possibly from fighting. His eyelid will be swollen for for a few days. You can apply either Terramycin eye ointment from the feed store or plain Neosporin ointment into his eye 2-3 times a day. After a week or so the swelling should go down, and you should be see his eye to see if it is intact.
