I went and collected our 3 runners yesterday, all 2 years old. Obviously, it goes without saying that they are very nervous when I approach. I don't want it to always be like this, and would love for them to eventually run towards me rather than away. Other than giving them time to adjust (which is the obvious) do you have any tips for building their trust, and helping me to work towards hand feeding and petting...or is this never going to happen ?

The previous owner could do this easily, incase it helps.

thanks in advance.

Patience, just sit with them talking quietly, walking towards them will make them very nervous, try to be on their level as much as possible but mainly just spending time with them sitting quietly waiting for them to come around you and your daughter. Runners tend to be on the nervous side anyway so extra patience is in order. Plus at their age this is even more of a BIG change in their lives. They'll come around with TLC... and don't forget the treats.. Dried meal worms, thawed peas. Congrats on your new ducks!!

My runners also really like ripped up pieces of lettuce in a big bowl of water, or in the swim pan.

My theory is if they associate you with good feelings things will eventually smooth out. The buffs I adopted are warming up, and it is taking months to see significant change. But it is happening.

I echo what's been said here. As a guy, and a big one at that, even ducks I raised from hatchlings wouldn't come near me unless I was sitting on the ground. Then tempt them with food.

They are getting more relaxed already, but still petrified if I get too close (10ft). They had the whole garden today, but instead of exploring, they just seemed to prefer sleeping. Lucky devils.

Thanks for all the advice. Its a very slow process I know. Ill get there though, but to be honest, they really make me smile when I see them, so even halving the distance between us will be more than a result !
