Anybody else having sticker shock on coffee?

Chickory root is pretty strong, need alot of cream and milk and sugar to cut the bitterness down. We used that type of coffee for CW reenacting but Cafe de Monde coffee smelled so good. Good thing they do ship but I don't drink them. I remember those beinets donuts........loaded with powdered sugar. Lickalicious!

I don't buy junk food or soft drinks so I'm willing to pay to get good coffee. It's my last vice and I'm not giving it up without a fight.

Chaga!!! It is a fungi. You find it on birch trees, chop it off, dry it out, grind it up, and make a delicious coffee like brew. Rich in antioxidants, and loads of other immune boosting properties. It has been an approved cancer drug in Eastern Europe for a long time, and you can find it in many natural immunity tonics and supplements. You can drink it cold w/ a little maple syrup and half and half.

It isn't just coffee. The price of absolutely everything keeps going up, and packages keep getting smaller. I dread going to the grocery store.

I think I've heard of this before! I think it was on Andrew Zimmern's show. A guy in one of the Carolina's makes it.

Sounds interesting. I note no one mentions how chaga actually tastes. Will keep an eye out in the woods for any birch with nasty burnt swelling cancerous growths...

But back to what I have...dandelions. The google results seem tedious, but simple. Since all I have in the house today is some hideous ancient cheap decaf ground coffee that tears my guts up, I will go out in this sunny day and thin out the dandelions. Later!

edited to update: while the roots are roasting, I tried cooking the greens...

Ok, I can't believe this myself.... I'm paying $5-$7 for the 'cheap' coffee when the designer stuff used to be that price. I got through LOTS of coffee, I mean really... my pot is always piping hot with fresh coffee to get me through my day. This is INSANE!

I just remember Andrew Zimmern drinking the liquid that the fungi was cooked in (I think that was the process, anyways) and saying it tasted much like coffee. The guy who made it liked living off wild mushrooms/fungi.

Coffee, cocoa, sugar and peanuts have all had a poor growing year compared to past years. Coffee and Cocoa are also losing some of their habitat to grow in, and both plants are fairly finicky about where they grow. Costs aren't being bumped up without reason for candy, coffee, and peanut butter. It's due to shortages in the crops.

Many times you can rebrew coffees and teas at least once and still get a decent, albeit weaker, cup. That can help save on costs if you get twice as much out of a can.

ok, I've put the roasted chopped up dandelion roots on simmer - let's hope it turns out better than their greens, blargh!
