After years of being terrified of ChatGPT, I finally caved and learned to use it this year. I used it to help with everything from bedding decisions, to vent placement, predator proofing etc. I also read like 5 books for concrete knowledge. My lil ladies are already 5 months and I feel like it really helped me be successful up to this point.

Anyone else use ChatGPT as a planning tool?

I have used ChatGPT for lots of things! It isn't correct about everything all the time, but it also provides the sources used for the information. In fact BYC is one of the places it pulls information from when asking chicken-related questions, so I think it was pretty savvy of you to use it for info :)! I'd be curious to know what kind of questions you asked and how it answered!

That’s awesome that it pulls info from here! It actually makes me feel a lot better for using it. I asked so many questions that I have to go back to remember any. 😂

I don't know much about ChatGPT specifically, but when you get an AI generated response on Google, it pulls from a wide variety of sources. Unfortunately, not all of them are reliable - it includes things like reddit and even satirical sites like the Onion. I just don't trust the answers.

I understand that. I was hesitant. I however verified most info with my own search and relied on books for things like needs, health, etc. One place it really came in handy for me was coop planning. I would give it dimensions and the layout for example then ask about ventilation needs and placement.

It's always a good idea to double-check information. I have found that ChatGPT has gotten much better at citing sources and also listing the specific information used from each source. Then, the user is able to click on those sources and make a more informed decision about whether it is reliable or not.

Exactly I use it as a tool my brain of that makes sense. I have a lot of ideas and my brain moves fast. So organizing tights into actionable plans can be quite difficult. I was also so anxious that I kept second guessing myself every step of the way. I retrofitted a shed extension into the coop. To me it was actually harder than starting from scratch. I had to figure out ventilation, best wall for roost placement, nesting box etc

It is a great tool when used in combination with other sources! GPT is especially good at putting a lot of info into an easily understandable, organized outline. I think a lot of people are "afraid" of AI, and I don't blame them. However, when used responsibly it can be extremely beneficial!

For the record, I'm not afraid of AI. But I have a background in research and I trust my own ability to sift through sources more than I trust AI to do it. I'm not knocking anyone for using it, it's just my policy not to use it.
