Anybody in the Rochester NY area processing chickens?

Hey Tracey,

I don't have birds to eat, just egg layers. I too have one nasty pullet. I don't know what to do with her, but I know I couldn't kill her. I'd like to find her a new home with more birds. I don't think she'd be so bad then. I only have 5 total.

Good luck with whatever you do.

Steph

Not than I can help not living in NY. I have tried to find someone in my area that processes. 1 butcher shop 10 miles to the east does it. Their price is a flat 2.00 a bird no matter the size. The problem he won't set up processing line unless you start with 50 birds. I only want 8-10 done. Guess I will just to grin and do it. I would like to add that ducks, geese and turkeys cost more, but how much I didn't ask. John

I live in Hilton and have done them myself (skinning) up to this point, 10 at a time. It's not difficult - just takes time. If you need help and aren't in a big hurry I'm in.

Hey John--Where is the processor you mention in your post? I will have 25 birds say mid-June and am looking for a processor within an hour or so drive of me. I am near the Pittsburgh airport. There is a processor in PA about an 1 1/2 north of me but am still looking for other facilities.

Thanks much,

Kelly

Morning Kelly, The processing shop is in Alliance Oh, it is B&P Poultry. I talked to them last summer. All I have is their phone # 330-867-2519. That would be a good drive for you. I have a good idea of where you are. I spent 2 months working on a couple restaurants next to if I remember right at Robinson Town Center. Red Lobster and Bahama Breeze. Spent a lot of evenings roaming around the area. I hope you find a shop that works out for you. Not much of anything around here and that is the way I like it. Let me know how you do. John

Hey John--Thanks for the info. It looks to me to be about a 2 hour drive from me? What do you think? What did you think of the processing facility?

I'll let you know what else I find; I called the OH Meat Inspection Department (or whatever it was called) and they gave me some other names as well.

Thanks again,

Kelly

One thing I have found quite helpful in feather picking and general aggresion in hens is to seperate the offender for about a month, to a location where she can not be social with the othrs at all, not even through a fence. Then bring her back, if you can over a fence at first, then into the pen. She will have lost her place in the pecking order and will usually no longer take on the aggresive role. However she can become the picked on, so sometimes it's not a true win.

Thanks, April...If I can figure out a way to make that work with my set-up, I might give it a try....at the very least, removing her for a month would give the others' feathers a chance to grow back!
