anybody know a broody breed of hens?

They will not lay at the level of a leghorn or sex link which are egg producing machines. Generally they will lay 4 to 5 eggs a week until their bodies say "enough" and then they will go broody. If you want hens for eggs, get sex links and leghorns and then have some cochins and silkies for "pretty" and feathered incubators.

This past summer every breed in my barn went broody! I had barred rocks, cochins, brahmas, easter eggers, a few mixed breeds & even a old former battery hen (a rhode island red) all were broody. Must have been something in the water : ). Now as far as being a good mother the Light Brahma did the best. She has hatched chicks for me twice & both times had a 100% hatch rate & was an exceptional mother who stayed with her brood for 4 months! My blue cochin abandoned her poor babies after only 3 weeks! I also have a blue laced red Brahma that did pretty well this summer for her first time. I suggest the Brahmas.
