Anybody on here ever heard of Caponizing ?

I haven't had a chance to talk to my vet. I actually work at the place. I rent a room from the animal hospital and run a dog grooming operation. So it is just a matter of walking over there. He was out yesterday. The staff normally makes the appt's any way, so I asked them if they knew anything about it. It is NOT on their price list. Imagine that!? LOL But one of them reminded me of how hard it is to anesthesize a bird. They have already knocked one of my hens out for some suturing = $125. Though I get a discount so didn't pay full price.
They already think I am a nut job. So I will have it done if it is not too much. DH is really bugging me as the roos go after him. We can start with the worst affender, and go from there.
OT side note: One of my friends had her pet rats neutered. I thought $70 apiece was a lot. But the vet (different place) told her is was an unusual procedure and rather difficult in rats, hence the seemingly high price. When my friend got new rats she had them done too. It was apparently worth it to her.

Oh gawd, lets all just run out and buy that!! EWWWW, and Blech!
and we think it is ok to do this to a living body with no anesthesia?
Oh no, no, no, not on my birds......

do they use anesthesia on any animal that they "fix" and castrate,, other then dogs and cats?? they dont even use it on poor little boys when their babies....... isnt there lots of animals we support this being done too,, when we buy it at the store?,m, cattle,, sheep,,, capons........

:Dyep. A friend of mine who is also a vet.......does it all the time.....but he is italian and will do anything!

Actually anesthetic cream *is* often used for circumcisions these days, fwiw.

Anesthesia (local or general) is not infrequently used when gelding horses. I don't *think* it is normally used with other livestock but am not positive.

However, one big difference: that is just a superficial operation -- tiny slit in the skin and snip snip and it's done. (Actually with some livestock, they don't even cut the skin, just use a special tool to crush the spermatic cord from outside).

Whereas caponizing a rooster is major abdominal surgery. Due to the difference in where bird testes vs mammal testes are stored.
