One of my room mates had two pets mice in college and boy did they stink! it seemed like no matter how often she cleaned the cage, they still stunk up the whole apartment!

Gerbils are nice pets and they don't really stink. My brother wants a pet and I keep trying to get him to buy gerbils. They are pretty low maintenance as far as pets go, and you can still hold them and play with them.

Even rats stink less than mice! But if smells bother you, I would probably steer clear of small rodents.

I have kept and raised rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters - I agree with Lauren "Mice stink". Regardless of how frequently you clean them mice have a strong odor. For me the most intelligent and inquisitive of the four species were rats.

We raised both rats and mice years ago as feeders. I don't remember the mice smelling, but that could be my memory lol. I do remember the rats were much more personable and friendly than the mice. Were I inclined to have a rodent pet, I'd go with a rat.

I'd think a chain would be an okay place to buy a mouse from. True, they may not be tame, but really neither will one from a local pet shop. Get a young one like hopper size and it will tame down nicely with food. I can't imagine the animals from the chains would have any diseases, it's not like they're catching them from the wild and selling them. I'm sure their ancestors haven't lived out of a cage for a hundred generations.

Hahahaha, were they male mice? because male mice stink more :D

She had two females. I'm pretty sensitive to smells, so it definitely bothered me more than anyone else! I wasn't crazy about rat smell either, which is why I ultimately decided not to get them (and adopted a dog instead). I did really enjoy playing with a classmate's rats though. I think they would make an awesome pet.
