One of my Rhode Island Red girls gave us this discolored egg this morning. Brown and white with a bulls eye. The texture of the shell is rough almost like sand paper. Has anybody seen this and what might be the cause?

I've had a few like that or similar over the years. I have no clue what causes it but I'd suspect perhaps something to do with not enough/too much vitamins,minerals...I'm not sure and could be wrong. I've eaten the eggs with no issues.

Thanks, they are only 9 months old so maybe it is due to being young. This is the first strange egg I have gotten from them. They all eat well and are healthy so I am going with it is a freak thing. I will let you all know if I get any more like it.

I've never gotten the bulls eye on any of mine, but my hatchery RIR lay those two-toned washed out looking eggs from time to time. They are either on layer or gambird feed depending on the time of year (doesn't seem to matter) and free range most of the day so I don't think it's diet related.

I've found eggs like that but it's always the eggs that are laid out in the open rather than the nest. I always figured that it was the light that caused that coloring.

exactly my question!! I got one just like that this morning. I often get eggs with a white "overspray" on the shell. Looks kinda like someone misted it with spraypaint. They seem OK on the inside. I just hope it doesn't mean the hen is ill.

I have not seen one like that before, but my white Rock lays one that is a medium pinkish brown color at one end, graduating to pale cream at the other, and then it has a band of salmon pink speckles around the middle.
