Hello,
Ive been on this site for about six months but never introduced myself. I own a small flock of chickens. I raised all of the money in order to build the coop and take care of my chickens. No help from anyone.I worked for all of the money myself and did all the research myself. All of my fifteen chickens are alive an well. I do admit my parents have been supportive and help buy food since they are attached to them as well. Yet somehow after all this work i still get critasized.People always tell me im doing it wrong. Ive gotten everything to "you have to make sure theybhave freshwater" duh im not stupid as well as chickens are bad messey and you should never have them and an old timer told me i had to burn there beeks of or they will kill eachother and still insists on it. What are your personal opinions on a responsible young person owning a flock of chickens

Way to go! I don't feel it would be any different than raising livestock for 4h or whatever. When I was growing up We had cattle, I was 11 when my dad bought me my first bottle baby. I raised her, saw her have 3 calves. Had my own "herd" by the time I was 16. Nothing wrong with a kid learning and caring for animals. Keep up the good work!!

I completely agree with you. Though i just got a job and started helping paying for the feed it is normally me that feeds my chickens, Waters my chickens, And spends time with them everyday... Most adult i know didnt even know that chickens lay blue eggs so they dont really criticize me or correct me. My mother isnt really one to spend time with animals and my father will never touch an open wound on any of our animals so its normally me that has to dress and clean any wounds my animals get everyday. Infact i'm treating a large gash under my turkey's wing on the side rinsing it out everyday cleaning it and covering it up everyday.. I am also currently saving up for materials to build a breeding coop as well which i will have the help of my Dad but after that its going to be a Solo lil' thing for me to do. I;d have to pay for the feed, Bedding, feeders/waterers ect.
Right now i'm taking care of a flock of over 30 chickens with more on the way. So my answer is aint no way am i against Younger people raising chickens by themselves

You sound like a very smart, responsible chicken owner. I say, keep up the good work! Just a friendly suggestion - it doesn't hurt to hear what people have to say (unless just out-and-out ridiculous like you have to burn their beaks off). Most of them are probably just trying to help, so you might want to listen to what they have to say, then YOU can do research and check out if what they're saying is true or not. Sometimes you can learn a lot from others. Again, I'm really proud of you - sounds like you take better care of your pets than some adults do. You should be commended for that!:thumbsup
