Anyone against a younger person raising chickens

We have many young people doing well here. They are just like other BYC members, we don't treat them like kids, because they are just as serious as adults, sometimes even more so.

I started showing dogs when I was 12, my parents & family hated it. None the less I prevailed and had many champions, etc.

You have the right attitude - everyone has opinions about how things should be done- what's good for them may not be right for you. I would just listen politely and do what I felt was best. Welcome to Backyard chickens

I think it's great for folks to start whenever they are mature enough to take on the responsibility, even sooner if they are getting help from someone who can guide them. I was involved in various animal husbandry since before I was old enough to even remember. I think it's a great context in which to learn so much about life. One of the things you learn quick is that people have all sorts of opinions and that sometimes they share them just to strike up a conversation even when they really don't know what they are talking about. I'd recommend taking it all in with stride and a grain of salt, let it roll of you like water off a ducks back :~), take in what helps, leave the rest in the compost bin! honestly these days, it seems that many adults grossly underestimate what younger folks are capable of, I'd say be humble and proud, all at the same time. sounds like you have a great attitude... onwards and upwards!

I completely agree with you. Though i just got a job and started helping paying for the feed it is normally me that feeds my chickens, Waters my chickens, And spends time with them everyday... Most adult i know didnt even know that chickens lay blue eggs so they dont really criticize me or correct me. My mother isnt really one to spend time with animals and my father will never touch an open wound on any of our animals so its normally me that has to dress and clean any wounds my animals get everyday. Infact i'm treating a large gash under my turkey's wing on the side rinsing it out everyday cleaning it and covering it up everyday.. I am also currently saving up for materials to build a breeding coop as well which i will have the help of my Dad but after that its going to be a Solo lil' thing for me to do. I;d have to pay for the feed, Bedding, feeders/waterers ect.
Right now i'm taking care of a flock of over 30 chickens with more on the way. So my answer is aint no way am i against Younger people raising chickens by themselves
Hmmm lol you remind me of myself only i wish i had thirty chickens! Or a turkey but i dont think my familys to keen on that idea im lucky i was even aloud chickens! :lau:wee

There is no reason a young person cannot raise chickens I also grew up taking care of 100 on the farm so hold your head up sounds and looks like your doing fine and so glad your here

Hello,
Ive been on this site for about six months but never introduced myself. I own a small flock of chickens. I raised all of the money in order to build the coop and take care of my chickens. No help from anyone.I worked for all of the money myself and did all the research myself. All of my fifteen chickens are alive an well. I do admit my parents have been supportive and help buy food since they are attached to them as well. Yet somehow after all this work i still get critasized.People always tell me im doing it wrong. Ive gotten everything to "you have to make sure theybhave freshwater" duh im not stupid as well as chickens are bad messey and you should never have them and an old timer told me i had to burn there beeks of or they will kill eachother and still insists on it. What are your personal opinions on a responsible young person owning a flock of chickens

Obviously you love what you do and are doing it well enough:). Some old timers - such as 'burn off the beaks' - don't know it all and could do with some education themselves.
You will find that whatever you do in life there is always someone ready to come down on you - listen to what they have to say, if it has value - use it, if not discard it.
Educate people as you go along, hopefully it will be useful to them and change some attitudes, hang in there! :hugs

Hello welcome to backyard chickens! THERE IS TOTALLY NOTHING WRONG WITH A YOUNG PERSON RAISING CHICKENS! I am!!!! And I think I've been doing a pretty good job! I think you will find there are lots of younger people on this site that raise chickens!
