Meet Hennypenny. This lovely lady and her chicks were found in a ditch near my parents home. The chicks were a few days old at the time. So we decided to take them in and give them a home.

We had been meaning to get chickens for some years now and had even built a coop the utility never got around to getting the chickens.

Can anyone help identify her breed? I presume determining the chick breed/crossing would be very difficult?

she looks like she is crossed with a silke

the other breed from the looks of her hackles may be a brown leghorn or welsummer, even some sort of crele bird

It also looks like one of the chicks has a mutant back toe. I thought it was five toed at first but it's only on one foot, and it looks like the chick doesn't have any control over it. It just kind of flaps. Should I be concerned?

no need for alarm

that confirms its a silkie cross breed

silkies have 5 toes and other breeds have 4

so a cross

looks like yours got only one of each in the toe department
