Anyone built a coop that is semi Bear proof?

Beekeepers worry about bearproofing probably as much as anyone. I mean what do bears stereotypically love more than *honey*?

Apparently bears can destroy many many hives in just minutes, and often do.

The bee folks use well-visible electric fence, running at REALLY HIGH VOLTAGE (I would have to look it up, but IIRC they stipulate you need like 7-8,000v, which is about twice the zap needed for doglike predators and about 3-4x what you need to contain horses or cattle), set as far back from the hives (or in this case, coop) as is practical. The latter is because the closer the bear can get to the temptation, the stronger the temptation is.

Somewhere on BYC is a thread about a U-haul someone turned into a coop...That's your answer!

One of those shipping containers they can deliver to your place? You could cut ventilation in and make it too small for infiltration. Cut pop doors and leave the big doors on.

A run is never going to be bear proof, but daytime is always a risk. The shipping container would work for night!

I knew this was the right place to ask for advice. And no it's definitely not wild boars I have a problem with. I can't get them in quick enough to keep up with the sausage making needs of my family and friends. If chicken coops drew in Hogs I'd be building them all over Florida. The bears have a migrating pattern around the Osceola National Forrest and the property in Question is on the bear highway.

Holy Cow. ^_^ My predator problems pale compared to this.

I guess I should just start being gratefulfor my foxes and coyotes.

I added these for bear proofing. But, while bears are around they are rarely seen.

the only way a bear could really break into my coop is through the coop door but i highly doubt it would because we have a half inch thick lock plus it is right beside a horse pen that is easier to get in to and we don't have many bears around our house

I don't know if you could build anything bearproof unless it was a converted sherman tank!!! I have seen bears peel doors off of cars and they were shut and locked to begin with!
