anyone else hatching on the 26th?

Info on power outages during Incubation.
From- A Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow

The more valuable your hatching eggs are, the more likely it is that the electricity will go out during incubation. If you have an uninterruptable power source (UPS) for your computer or other electronic equipment, consider disconnecting the usual equipment and using the UPS to power your incubator. If the outage comtinues beyond its capacity to keep your incubator running, or you don't have an UPS, open the incubator and let the eggs cool until the power goes back on.

Trying to keep the eggs warm is likely to cause abnormal embryo development. Furthermore, if you close the vents or wrap the incubator with blankets in your attempt to keep eggs warm, a greater danger than temperature loss is oxygen deprivation. Developing embryos use up oxygen rather rapidly, and the oxygen level may soon fall below that necessary to keep them alive.

As soon as the power goes back on, close the incubator and continue operating it as usual. The effect of the outage on your hatch will depend on how long the power was out and on how long the eggs had been incubated before the outage. A power failure of up to 12 hours may not significally affect the hatch (except to delay it somewhat), especially if the outage occurred during the early incubation, when cooled embryos naturally tend to go dormant. Embryos that are close to term generate enough heat to carry them through a short-term outage.

Today is day 12. That makes me due on the 21st (if I've done my mental math right).

First time incubator hatching. Whoohoo!
I've got 5 BBS ameraucanas from Cree Farms, 3 buff orps from my girls, three buff orp/welsummer mutts from my lot, and two mille fluers from my girls. I've tossed three blue eggs already. Fingers crossed for the rest!

I have a hen sitting on 8 more Cree Farms BBS ameraucanas. They are due on the 19th. I'm hoping to get a grand total of 8 out of the shipped BBS eggs. I started with 16 so hopefully I can get at least a 50% hatch between the hen and my incubator. So far the ones left in the incubator have all shown veining and development. Let's hope I don't screw it up too bad!

Oh! Thank you Kitty, I had not thought about it being analogous to a power outage but of course that is exactly right. I feel much better now.

I was never neurotic at all about my own pregnancies, believe it or not -- I just find eggs in the incubator to be very stressful <rolling eyes at self>

Taking deep breath,

Pat, irked that the bulb should have blown at all when it was brand spankin' new at the beginning of my last setting.

I have 16 of Dipsy Doodle Do's Americaunas due on the 26th and 36 of Pumpkinpup's variety due on the 28/29. That three dozen are her prized BLRW, silver marans, French marans, blue barred rock, and some special eggs she sent. I am so excited!! The 3 dozen eggs were in shipment for 6 days from GA to TN. I just knew they were lost, but arrived safely. I am looking forward to candleling tomorrow night, if I can wait that long. Good luck to everyone.

So how are yer eggies doing?

I couldn't stand it anymore, and candled (I think I'm on day 9 or 10, not sure I've got it straight how you're supposed to count)... 11 are goin', 1 blood ring, 6 clears. Not a super fertility rate but a LOT better than the 1 blood ring and 20 clears I had from last month's setting from these same sussexes

Hoping that at least some of the 11 will make it to hatching,

Pat

I candled mine last night and they're still squirming around. I could actually see webbed feet pressing up against the shell.

Everyone send some girl vibes my way. The last batch I hatched from the same parents were all boys. I need some GIRLS this time.

Hey Citygirl.
My hatch is due on the 21st as well and they are Silkies. This is also my first hatch and I candled them three times total and saw little aliens in most of them. I have 15 in the bator and 5 are Splash and the rest are Blue and not sure on some as the hens mother was blue and her father was white and she is a mocha type color so I am not sure what I will get from her eggs.

I will remove the turner on the 18th and just wait and wait and wait. I installed the air fan and the turner so that I have constant air flow and it is great to have the turner so that frees me up from turning eggs but I still check them at least 4 times a day or more.
WHEW I will be sooooo glad when this is DONE:lol:

This is like having a baby with out the pain but still the impatience of hurry up so I can see what I have:lol:
Keep me posted Citygirl and I will do the same if and when mine hatch.
Linda

You're welcome.

They say to replace the bulb with each setting but, I don't either. Even a new bulb can go during a setting--I've had it happen.

I'm getting ansy to candle. I was going to wait until Tuesday night but, I may candle later tonight after it gets darker--it's dusk now. I'm so hoping that the change in rooms has helped but, I probably won't know yet as most of the last hatch died after this stage.

Candled.
21 left in the bator that looked good
7 left in that were questionable
6 clears
11 started and died
45 total eggs were set

What I don't get is the eggs, like last hatch, appear to be in different stages. They were collected everyday and set the same time.

Hey, Milliestwo!

I have candled three times (mainly because it is so freaking cool!). I have swoern to leave the little buggers alone for the rest of their bake time.

I started out with 16 in there.
8 Cree Farms Ameraucanas- two candled clear and 1 had a blood ring
3 welsummer/buff orp mix- truthfully can't tell a darn thing in there. I think they are developing. None smell bad so far, so I have left them.
3 buff orp- again, I think they are all developing. I can't really tell.
2- mille fleur d'uccles- Both are developing. I saw one swimming around last night. I was freakishly cool! Swim, little baby, swim!

So... to my uneducated eye, I have 13 of the 16 developing. I'll be pretty pumped if 4 of the Ameraucana eggs make it. I have yet to get a good hatch out of my buff orps, so who know what they will do. I've never tried the welsummer mix, so we'll see what happens. I think the buff problem is with my girls and not the roo. He seems to be doing his job.

Two days before the incubator is done, my hen should hatch out some of her eight. The place will be crawling with babies! Can't wait to see everybody's babies.
