Anyone else pay for pullets and get mostly cockerels?

I bought 4 sexed pullets last fall and one ended up to be a roo. I'm still really bitter. I know, I only ended up with one, which is way less than what all of you are having to deal with. But the stinker is, I wanted 4. I have room for 4. My hen house will only hold 4. So now I'm kind of stuck.

Everyone tells me that I can't add one to my 3 or she'll get picked on by the others. I have to add 2. But I don't have the roosting bar space in my hen house. My run is plenty large for 5 hens. So now it appears I have to wait for one to pass before I can add to my flock.

I too expected this to be more exact in this day and age. And when they have a HUGE sign above the chicks stating that they are 97% guarenteed females, what are the chances that I'd end up with a roo when I only bought 4.

/shrug, it happens. I am just curious why we ordered two favorelle pullets (and yes, it says that on the receipt) and both are roos. Seems odd, especially since favorelles can be feather sexed. I have the ones I took in with my hatched chicks and have lots of other roos, so it's not a big deal to me, but I could not believe that they would send us two roos out of two chicks, plus OP also got two favorelle roos. Unless, of course, they have really odd breeding stock that produce oddly colored pullets, but that's a last ditch hope.

I just started at Rural King a month ago. my first day I walked in they had just got chicks in. One bin had Barred Rock saod pullets in them. I asked the kid that works there was he there when the chicks came in. He said yes. I asked him did he check the box of BR's that are marked pullets. He said yes it said pullets. I told him those are straight run, I see a bunch of roosters in there. He said they were marked pullets and the manager said to mark them as pullets. I said we really need to put straight run on these cause we are going to have some mad customers. We changed the sign. Next day I come in and the manager had changed the sign back to pullets. She said the hatchery said they were pullets and I was mistaken. 3 weeks later we are having to replace chicks that were sold as pullets. Guess next time she will listen to me.

Anyway hatcheries do make mistakes too. I brought home the last SLW fron the pullet bin and picked out 5 White Rocks out of the straight run. I ended up with 5 White Rock pullets and I really think the SLW is a roo. They are almost 6 weeks old and the SLW has a red comb and getting waddles. Guess I have better luck with the straight run bin.

That's where I started... I decided that I might as well get a couple more... while I was at it, I might as well build a bigger coop... since I was building a bigger coop I might as well plan on making it bigger than I need so I won't have to build another... now that I have all of this room I can get a few more... Before you know it you're the crazy chicken lady at your job...

That's what I thought when I got the order. "Man, if someone as new to chickens as me know that those are boys how could someone who sexes chicks for a living mess that up?"

I think I'll just contact them and let them know for their quality control purposes. I'll settle for the number of pullets I have, try to find homes for the cockerels, and move on. I wouldn't accept any offers for replacements. I'm stressed already worrying about how to rehome these guys. (I'm too much of a wimp to butcher them.)

Thanks for weighing in, guys. BYC people are the best.

I trusted a breeder who said she could sex them and got 6 cockerels and 4 pullets!....not getting chicks from her again.
