Anyone else want to stomp on their incubator?

My new Genesis is running at 101 at egg level. I'm just going to leave it be and see how it goes.

I used a water wiggler, the only reason I check the air temp for is to gauge the range. I know that if the air temp is between 103 and 95 that the wiggler temp has stayed where it needs to be, but of course I also check the wiggler. My wiggler stays within a max of half a degree of 99.5, but usually .2 of a degree. I have a homemade bator with a mercury thermostat. Good luck, and I honestly wouldn't try hatching anything without a wiggler! (I literally mean I wouldn't, because I'm so prone to screwing up when I obsess over things!)

I've tried this and it doesn't work for me. I keep mine at 100 degrees (more or less) still or forced air, with the thermo midways of the eggs. How in the world are you supposed to get the thermo at the top of the egg anyway?? I just lay mine (white walmart cheapos) on top of the turner rack.

If you measure temp at mid-level on the egg, instead of at the top of the egg, of course 102 won't work for you. The reason is that in a still air 'bator, there are layers of air at different temps. At the bottom, it's cooler, because warm air rises. So at the bottom, on the wire, it may be about 98-99, center 100, top could be 101-102. If mid-level were 102, your tops would be 103-104, which might kill the embryos.

In a forced air 'bator, the temp is more even throughout, as the air is constantly moving, so you don't have the layered temps effect.

The target temp to hatch a chicken egg, (or turkey or guinea) is 99.5-100.5F. So still air achieves that with the average temp between the top and the bottom of the egg.
In forced air, there is no average top/bottom, both should be the same, or so close it doesn't matter.

Never had any problems with my Genesis, everything is auto and yep, throw away that thermometer that came with it. I love my flukers from PetSmart in the reptile section.

What is this water wiggler I keep reading about.

And thanks for all the help and support everybody. Good advice.

A water wiggler is a toy you put a thermo in and it simulates egg temp.

Air temps vary a lot. The egg temp is what's important.

Here's a pic of my old bator with the wigglers.

A water wiggler is a fliud filled kids toy that you can insert your thermometer probe into to get an idea of what the internal egg temp is. I used one for awhile, but don't anymore. My hatches are still good without it and it just takes up room in the bator that I'd rather fill with eggs.
