Anyone ever ordered ducklings from Meyer Hatchery?

Here they are first thing getting home being handfed GrowGel.

Adorable! Always, always beware of preds and other dangers no matter where you live. Best of luck!

was there a minimum of ducks you had to get at the hatchery? and do they know what gender they are?

i don't like the minimums on some sites. because i can only have so many duck or chickens at a time in the city.

Meyer Hatchery Minimums:
  • Bantam - 3, BB Turkey - 5, Chicken - 15 (Jan-Mar), Chicken - 3 (Apr-Dec), Chukar - 50, Ducks - 3, Eggs - 6, Geese - 8,Guinea - 15, Juvenile - 1, Muscovy - 6. Peafowl - 8, Pheasant - 35, Pullet - 1, Quail - 50, Rare Pheasant - 25, Rare Turkey - 20
Metzer Farms will ship as few as two ducks or geese, but I've never ordered from them and don't know anything about them other than they have a good selection of ducks. So does Meyer Hatchery though. Yeah, I don't know who is better. You could start a new thread asking about it. Have to say, Mine as a lively bunch that have continued to do well so far. I am in the suburbs myself so I understand your wanting quackers and not being able to. My last place had an acre, but I wasn't allowed ducks there. Deer regularly came and ate out of my bird feeder and we had stray cats randomly show up, but ducks were non negotiable. The city coucil must have been full of prissy feathered haters.

It was kind of a deal breaker for me. When I found out that I had that much space and flat out couldn't have any ducks, I told my husband that we should move closer to his work because even if the yard was smaller, at least I could have what I wanted. My current yard is sunstancially smaller, but I can have my enviromentally friendly pest control here!

Yeah, they only allow so many, but I don't think any more would be very happy in my yard. I might get overrun by duck poop as they patroled the yard during the day.

I believe it was Chualar California. Kind of near the coast on the elbow part of California (near the middle where it bends/ It looks like an elbow to me anyways

I've got another question. My ducks seem too hot with the red 250 heat light but have even more difficulty sleeping under the regular 150 light bulb even though they seem far more comfortable. What should I do? Will they just adapt to sleeping under the brighter bulb?

What your seeing is the difference in the red which is calming and the while light which tends to over stimulate. Take away the white light it is keeping them awake. what age are ducklings and temp in your room your keeping them in?

I have not ordered ducks from them, but the hen chicks I just received came from Meyer (via MPC). They were well packed and arrived safely the next day via USPS Express mail. All four chicks were as promised and appear to be extremely healthy. I am in California.

If the ducks you received were shipped from CA, my guess would be that they partnered with another hatchery to help fill orders? Meyer in in Polk, Ohio.

My runners also came from California. My guess is from Metzer farms based on additional research. All12 were happy and are still growing at 5 weeks.

They are four or five days old. Their room is 71-73 degrees. When they have the red light which 250 they hide from it. They literally get as far away as possible and after a while start panting. They seem very comfortable in the white light which is 150 and lay sort of near it, but not under it, so I know they aren't cold. The themometer ends up saying it is over 100 in there when I leave the red light on for an hour which seems a bit extreme even for young ducklings. They are in a clear tote with pine shavings and a wire screen is stapled to cover a large square cut out of the lid. The light is about 8 inches up from that. Like I said, they seem very comforable with the white light. I just worry it is messing with their sleep cycles a little.

I read on Meyer's site that they had expanded due to high demand. I don't think they got them from Metzer because Metzer doesn't offer all of the same breeds that Meyer does. If I'd known I was going to be having birds coming from California I very well might have ordered their white layer.or the Golden 300 layer Metzer carry. Doesn't really matter to me now where the ducks came from, though. I'm just grateful they arrived safely and are healthy. I am curious if anyone knows how they make the eggs hatch on specific days? That's something that completely blows my mind.
