Anyone ever read this?

How ironic, I have a copy of the book coming in any day...order from Barnes & Noble...I wish I could show pics of hen house...an old potatoe house of old...oblong in shape...for the sake of predators, the door is left open but I have an inner wall of wire with door to enter to pick eggs...this wall keeps the chickens in at night...a window is on both sides of hen house...a small pop door to fenced in coop area that is left open in the day and closed for safety at night....they free range in daytime....

my second coop (I call it the killer coop)...had 26 pullets in it - now only 4...predators..raccoons I believe...have revamped-- cemented around bottom of wire, added a second fence inside where the chickens cannot come CLOSE to the outside fence...If that doesn't work I don't know what to do..Have put 3 chickens in to see how secure it is,(I believe it is or I would not put an animal in there)...had 108 chickens - down to 63... have moved all to the large outside fenced in coop, all ages and I cannot believe how well that has worked out...Prayers really are answered...Naturally egg laying is a laugh (2) today...stress, stress, stress but all are getting through it....they all come in to roost at night, I throw scratch in there and the RUN IS ON....thanks for listening...thats why I wanted the book to get pointers on what to do when winter comes.....

Love your coops .... G

I think this article is great and I love the coop ideas. My coop is beautiful but I live in a hot climate and I think I don't have enough ventilation, especially after dealing with this God awful summer. I'm getting ready to add more chickens and expand the run and I will look to change some solid walls to open ones. Thanks for sharing this info with us.

Both of ya'll have nice coops and nice an open. We live in the mts. of N.C. and we can get temps down below 0 which with wind chill can be pretty drastic. we have also gotten alot of snow the last 2 winters. I always keep my windows in the coop open at the top for ventalation and we have vents in the top of our coop. So far the coldest it's been in the coop is 20* and with the body heat they produce I haven't seen anyone suffering. One of my roos got a little frost bite on his comb. But they all come out even on the coldest days. except my cochin bantams they usually hang out inside on the worse days. [they don't like the snow and ice much] I guess ya'll really have to worry more about the heat than cold. Our highs so far this summer has been 89* which is extremely hot for us. usually mid 80's. I keep fans running in my duck side and chickens side. Like you said Kuntry girl it all depends on where you live as to how much open space you can have. I like your platform 7L what is that for?

The platform shades the birds from this awful heat plus I love to hang out up there.I might even get lucky & get some venision from there this hunting season. This coop houses my Bob"s.https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/63768_quail_pics_chick_eggs_010.jpg

That is really cool 7L and I bet you can see for miles. beautiful birds, do you raise to sell or just for yourself. I'll get some pictures of my coop to post it's not open like ya'lls but it's adquate and will work especially if I can convince hubby to take down part of south wall. right now we only have a window there.

I just love the open coop concept.

Highs of 89 WOW!! I would have a jacket on!!! I can't even remember highs in the 90's. It's been triple digit forever hear. Its really harder on the chickens in the heat than the cold & its harder on me to raise them in the summer as well. I'm constantly changing their water. I add ice you bet. I finally ordered a Ice Maker should get it next week. YEE HAW!! I'm gonna put the temp gauge in their water today just curious how hot it really gets. For those who live in the heat adding ice is a good way to bring the chickens body heat down. Not just your chickens your other pets as well. Don't take this heat lightly its deadly for the animals to live in. Animals fair better in the cold than the heat remember they always have a jacket on & we all know you don't need a jacket on in the summer. So, when its triple digits out there you could only imagine what it feels like walking around all day with a jacket on. Just guessing but a 100 probably means 110 to a chicken.

I have 2 coops, they are both open air. I live in Georgia where we have very hot summers and mild winters. This coop was made by taking an existing 3 sided shed and adding 16x14 hardware cloth run to the front of it. The chickens are very happy in it. Total with shed and run it is 14x28 and I have 16 chickens in it.
