I was thinking if I used a little food coloring in the water for my incubator so I can see when it runs dry. I don't think it will be harmful since it is something we can eat....Any thoughts?

hmm.. a float is not a bad idea... I may try both and if it stains I will still have the float for insurance

I have some water bottles that came with tiny floating turtles..I don't really use them to watch the waterers but I can take them out and use them for that.

I've put food coloring in the bator water & it does help to see if you need to add more. If you get any on the eggs, it also colors the chicks! I hatched silkies with fluffy pink butts.

I outlined the reservoirs in my LG with permanent marker and colored in the bottom so I could see them through the egg turner. (I kept missing them and getting the table all wet

) It seems to work fine. I can see the level by shining a flashlight down while I'm filling them. I've found that the middle one will hold about 40 mL and the ends will hold about 30 mL. (using a ink replacement syringe) I also tried the food coloring but it sticks to the sides as it evaporates but then rinses out when you clean the bator.

that is great!! ha! I wonder if that is how they get those chicks dyed for easter? they all look so cute and tempting to buy but I know they are mostly white leghorn roosters and I don't need those!
