I am currently putting up this metallic tape in trees around our area where the chickens will be free-ranging and also making a post for the "Niteguard" solar powered lights that are supposed to ward off predators. We have to have 3 levels for our predators. Black bears, coyotes, wolves, foxes, coons, weasels, etc. here in the U.P. Apparently..these little panels charge during the day and automatically blink this red flash (to mimic eyes..eye level with the predator) about half a mile away. We will have them directly on a post aimed in 3 directions as behind the coop and run is our pole barn. So, to the right, left and in front of the coop and run. The tape is to help ward off our Bald eagles, Osprey and hawks we have up here.
I was wondering if anyone has tried these things before and did it help with predators? I already bought them, but my chicks won't be going out to the coop and run for 2 weeks. If anyone had used these before..do you have any tips or tricks? Thanks

I think that your money and effort are better spent on coop and run security, and for bears, electric fencing, done right. Mary

In our experience, the only thing that keeps predators out are physical barriers. In lean times, predators will challenge or ignore other predators if it's life or death. I'm pretty sure red flashing lights won't make much of a difference to a starving coyote pack.

I was considering a Nite Guard system at one point, but when searching reviews of the items I ran across some that had game cams set up and had taken pictures of raccoon basically testing a chicken coop literally, right in front if the Nite Guard...

I think they're gimmicky, like so many electronic pest deterrents and "protect" more via coincidence than science and fact. I'd invest the cash for a nite guard into physical security or towards running a hot wire...

It's right up there with plastic owls, super sonic electronic devices that only pests can hear, CDs hung like Christmas ornaments and hiring the local witch doctor.

Now, I have a device that really works. And, if you act now for 3 easy payments of $89.95.....

I've been using nitegard for sever years and never lost a chicken. My boxes were taken off the post the other day by a helpful grandson. This morning all my young hens had been carried off by a predator. Too coincidental.
