Anyone Grind Their Own Oyster Shells?

I don't want to buy shells for multiple reasons: One, I'm anal about any kind of toxicness that my chickens get because that all gets concentrated in fat (like eggs) that I'm going to eat and I'm a youngin' that's probably going to have a kid in a few years. I would assume the stuff at the feed store is cheapo farmed oysters from ???. Two, waste of money. Three, I'm going to also have lots of black soldier flies for them, which provides lots of calcium, so I don't need much oyster shell.

I just have some oyster shells from ones my husband and I have eaten that I would like to give them. I have used a hammer and brick wall, but would love to just use a blender. If blendtec can do it, I think vitamix should be able to, as well! My blades are already old and messed up (can't tell you how many times we've left the spoon in there) so I'll just try it.

I was thinking that if the blades of a blender weren't old and messed up when you started, they would be after handling oyster shell!

I have a coffee bean grinder that's dedicated to shells.... it's really helpful. I throw some in with the food for the chooks, some back into the garden. Bottom line is that we have great eggshells from the girls. Super strong!

I have access to almost an unlimited supply of oyster shells and love the idea of anything that is free even with a little work involved. Besides I also have access to a fifteen year old son who wrestles in high school, he could use the additional workout out.

I love all the great ideas.
